Clashes over luggage left by Haj pilgrims leave 15 injured
A clash broke out between two sides in Kasba, Brahmanbaria,
over the luggage left behind by a pilgrim in Saudi Arabia. At least 15 people
were injured.
The clash began around 9:45 am on Saturday (June 13) between
locals from Shahpur and Araibari villages in Kadamtali area of the upazila
headquarters.
According to police and local sources, an old woman from
Shahpur village went to Saudi Arabia to perform the holy Hajj this year with
the Kasba Hajj caravan. While returning home, she left a piece of luggage
there. Later, her family members contacted the relevant Hajj agency on Thursday
demanding the return of the luggage. However, when the agency informed that the
luggage was the responsibility of the pilgrim, tension arose between the two
sides.
It is alleged that the relatives of the old woman vandalized
the Hajj agency office due to this incident. As a result, people from both
sides got involved in a clash with local weapons in Kadamtali area on Saturday
morning. At least 15 people were injured in the clash. The injured are being
treated at various local hospitals and clinics.
Kasba Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nazneen Sultana
said, “The clash between the two parties took place due to a dispute over
luggage. The police are working to bring the situation under control.”
Tensions remain high in the area as of this writing and
additional police have been deployed.
